Charles,

The center section of the LM Corvair can be a bit difficult to install a
modern DIN type radio. I've done two, in different ways in my two cars. My coupe
has a recessed bezel so that the radio is flush with the bottom edge of the
dash. Originally I installed it the other way, with the top flush, but Terry
Kalp showed me how much better it looked with the top recessed.

In my sedan, I wanted a stock look. It is a 500 and had a radio delete
plate. I used a similar recessed bezel and put the radio delete plate on a hinge
to act as a door. It is held closed with a cabinet magnet.

The bezels were formed from sheet metal and the corners were welded (not
really needed). They were installed in the dash with JB Weld. I cut out the
stock radio knob tabs and enlarged the radio opening.

As for speakers, my coupe has 4. Two 6x9s are mounted in a custom sloped
rear shelf cover. I put two 6" round speakers in the front doors. There is a
"squarish" cut out in the door metal in the lower front corner that allow the
speakers to be mounted there. I did have to cut the plastic chrome trim on the
door panel but that was too difficult. The sedan has a couple of 6" round
speakers in boxes on the shelf. I made the boxes small so they "hide" behind the
rear seat somewhat.
