Your #1 issue is the PG trans... while there are several very good (and
cheap) systems for the Corvair, few of them sound good with a PG trans
(which loads the engine differently than a manual trans)... and not only
do they sound ratty, they rob you of very important low end torque...
torque that you don't really miss with a manual trans.
My favorite exhaust on a manual is either the Clarks large bore
extractors or dual 2" modern turbo mufflers (I use the Walker Dynomax
SuperTurbo) on factory u-pipes... they sound and seem to perform
strikingly similar. Deep and loud. But they sometimes sound a bit
"ratty" on a PG IMO.
I've only heard two systems that I though sounded really good on a PG
engine.
One is using factory 140-type mufflers on the 110-u-pipes you can get
from the Corvair vendors. The baffled mufflers seem to retain the low
end torque and provide a more pleasing tone than the stock single
baffled muffler.... but they are not loud at all.
But my favorite is using a single modern turbo muffler (Flowmaster,
Dynomax SuperTurbo, etc) on the factory crossover. This seems to retain
the low end toque, provide more top end power, and sound great (even if
not quite like a Z28 or the like).
I've recently just purchased on of Matt's "big bore" crossovers to use
on a PG engine, figuring that the torque loss from the larger bore will
be minimal but the potential power gains and sound will be better than a
stock crossover.
Matt also makes a "big twin"... a large bore crossover that will accept
dual mufflers (and functions as an H pipe)... if you insist on running
duals, this is what I'd use as the balance tube will help keep more low
end torque.
Modern turbo mufflers actually flow better than most "cherry bombs"....
Good luck!!

>Howdee, new member here. I returned to "Planet 'Vair" last spring by buying a '65 Monza cpe, 110 Powerglide w/AC. I'm sure this has been talked about before but I want to try to set up some good sounding dual mufflers without going to headers yet,(yes I'm cheap). I have other issues to resolve before I get carried away. I want to make it an almost daily driver. Back in the 70's I had 65cpe with dual Cherry bombs (they're back on the market by the way), but there they were real loud. I tried Hush Thrushes but they were almost too quiet.

I know I am at a disadvantage with the PG but that's what I gotta live with for now. I'll probably get dual pipes from Clark's and try mufflers and tips (if there is room) from local sources.
