With any collector car, the smartest way is to buy the best, most
restored car you can afford. In the long run, it's virtually always the
cheapest way... it costs more to get a given car to a given condition
than most cars in that condition are worth.
So you did it the smart way.... though through ownership and use of any
old car you will get some mechanical experience. (I never meant to
become a mechanic but daily driving an MG will do that to you!) The good
news is, if you can read a cookbook you can read a shop manual!
My wife (with what sounds like a similar level of mechanical experience
that you have) did a 10,000 mile trip this summer with a Corvair-powered
VW camper... a trip which many of us with a lot more experience would
not take lightly.... and learned a lot through the experience. So I
don't think you'll miss much ownership experience.... it will just
likely come in different doses...
