Yes, 12 volt test light on sender wire with key on should light light.
But it may be dim, never tried it myself. I always use VOM meter ( DMM
for you young whippersnappers).
But, the easy test is to just hang the wire in mid air, not connected to
anything. Turn on key and check reading on gas gage. Now, connect the
wire to ground. Turn key on and check reading on gas gage.
One way should be beyond empty, the other way beyond full. If no change,
the wiring or gage is bad. If the gage moved, then the sender is bad.
Sender should be between 0 and 90 ohms on a late model. Ohms varies with
level of gas.
You could subtitute a 100 ohm potentiometer for the sending unit and
check the gage that way..... Too much trouble....
