Tim,
I'd say you are pretty accurate in comparing the 185/80R-13 to a
6.50-13. Not sure the accuracy of the use of 6.50's on '65's, but the
speedo for both the '65's and the later cars is still 825rpm
(revolutions per mile), which figures out to be 24.44" rolling diameter.
Whether any factor-built speedo really registered that is another
question.
The specs DO say that early wagons as well as all '66-later cars use
7.00-13's regardless. To my knowledge, no other car used that big a 13"
tire. At the time, GM's policy was to use certain size rims for certain
vehicle sizes, regardless of the engineering outcome. This meant that
even full-size Chevys came with 14" rims. No doubt, the 7.00-13 was
designed simply to comply with that edict, yet provide the load-carrying
capacity that those so-specified Corvairs needed, without going to a 14"
rim.
Sure wish the late models had had a 14" rim upgrade option. :o(
