Hi Ed, first of all, don't lift or support the car by the engine,tranny, or 
diff. The mounts are not designed to  take the weight of the whole car.
Lift the car one side at a time with a jack placed under the rocker panel 
near the rear. The rockers are strong enough to lift the car at least on an 
Early. Use a block of wood, even better is a block of wood with a slot cut 
in it for the pinchweld to sit in (across the grain or it may split). Both 
front and rear wheels will come off the ground. There is a triangular area 
ahead of the rear wheels with an extra steel plate on it that's perfect for 
a jackstand.
Once the back is up, or if you're just lifting the front, jack under the 
middle of the front crossmember.
