i have seen several weld repairs on crankcase halves and other large  
aluminum parts over the years to cover mold voids. they never seem to case any  leaks 
or other issues. i am guessing they failed inspection and got repaired,  
rechecked for tolerances and then put in service.  this still happens in  many 
industries. i would look at it carefully and then not worry about it.
