Can the tranny be that low on 
fluid and still have seemed OK?  I'm thinking of just adding ATF unitl I see 
the level on the dipstick.  Is this safe or do I risk overfilling?


You seem to have two problems...

1.  No fluid showing on the stick.  Answer, add fluid til the level shows.  See if the car now drives ok

2.  Work on finding out where the fluid that was in there, went.  Suggest clean paper under the car to show drips.  Put car on lift to see if fluid is coating the bottom.
