The alternator became standard with the 1965 models.  They are lighter  and, 
more importantly, provide more power at idle speeds.  Many early  models have 
been successfully converted to alternators.  See the tech  guides or buy an 
alternator from one of the vendors with instructions on how to  convert an early.
