I just wanted to send a note of thanks to Larry about the fine explanation
it wrote concerning fuel odors from hot soak!
Shortly after pulling my first and only (so far) Corvair into the garage, my
wife asked if it was supposed to stink like that. From that remark, my poor
old Corsa has been stuck with the nickname "Stinky". I've tried to explain
that all the old cars had the same smell when they were pulled into the
garage when they were hot, and that the new cars have ways of trapping the
vapor so it doesn't get into the air. I also said that the Corsa has 4
carbs, compared to only one that was on most of the cars she and I remember
from our younger days, and these 4 carbs are sitting on top of an engine
that is a lot hotter than the water-cooled cars we were used to. But she
continued to tell me that it shouldn't smell like that.
When I read Larry's article, I gave her the magazine and pointed out that
the article was written by a Corvair expert and that it better explained
what I had been trying to tell her for the last 4 years, and that it WAS
NORMAL. Nothing more has been said about it since then, however Stinky
hasn't been fired up yet this year, and I'm sure she'll have to say
something about it again. I'll just hand her Larry's article to read -
again.
