This sounds like fuel starvation, potentially caused by blockage of the fuel inlet screen in the fuel tank. It will flow for a while until all of the crud in tank gets stirred up and covers the screen. Then the gas stops flowing. After a while, the crud falls off, and it starts and runs until it stops up again.

What is the condition of the fuel tank? Inlet screen?
