Not the Fastback and Squareback. They had Type 3 engines, which are
basically Type 1 engines with a crank mounted cooling blower.
The Wasserboxer isn't related. It's a totally different engine from the Type
4.

The Type 4 was used in the Porsche 914, VW Square Back, Notch back, Fast
Back and buses. The one to get is the 2.0 liter from the 914 or the 80-83
Vanagon 2.1 liter. After 83 the Vanagon had the "Water Boxer" version on the
Type 4 engine. With only slight mods the type 4 will produce over 100hp with
ease.
