A few misunderstandings...

The 356/912 engine is a specialty application; very high performance for
the time. A decade later, the standard Type I engine is arguably a
better bet for a driver... parts being much cheaper and performance
being similar. And a Type 1 is closer to a "bolt in" replacement than
anything else. 356 guys are much more often purists and -need_ those
original engines... and the 912 is unloved by comparison, so it makes a
good donor.

The Type IV engine is a different beastie altogether. The one year only
912E was substantially modified to make it work... you can see from the
fabrication necessary in my early 912 that it was not a simple
bolt-in... and many Porsche people don't consider it a "real" Porsche
engine....so that's why the engine bays remain empty.
