Probably okay - But if held only at both ends (you have removed the  
cardboard inner-tube?) it will tend to bounce up and down as you drive. The guy  I saw 
do one, took a cheap (Harbor Freight) router and built a small fixture on  
one end. He used the slightly larger PVC tubing and shoved it  through/over the 
thin router bit. The fixture on the outlet side guided the  tube to rotate it 
slightly as it passed across the cutting bit. He ended up with  a spiral cut 
that made a bunch of revolutions through the length of the shift  tube, that 
let the tube compress as it was installed, and presented the  inner shift rod a 
hard and slippery (greased) surface to slide on  and retain it in place - at 
least up and down, during operation.
