Hey Bill, No it will not blow up. It will probably help if you soften
the old grease with WD 40
or maybe you can use some mineral spirits and submerge the whole
assembly to loosen things
up a bit. It helps if you have a third hand but you can also cover
the end of the pipe so you can
push on it with your body and have both hands free to facilitate
freeing up the locking ring. I use PVC
pipe as it seems to rotate less and grabs the bottom of the shifter
bell a bit better than a metal pipe.
Once you get it disassembled, make sure you relocate the locking ring
correctly as it will only lock
back in one way as the locking tangs are different sizes. Good Luck.
