Along the lines of being ripped off - as was discussed a few days back - it 
also helps when the service writer or mechanic you are speaking with on a 
diagnoses/ repair situation (modern cars) hears you use correct terminology. 
It helps to put a thought in his/her mind that "This person knows what the 
heck they are talking about and I'd best not try to pull a 'fast one' here."

It is not uncommon for me (after a free ride home) to later just drop in - 
pull right in to the "greeter area" at the garage - in a Vair.  This to 
check on what is happening and also to let them see that I have at least 
SOME idea about cars and how they work.  THAT tactic has saved me $$ on more 
than one occasion.
