Jim Schardt suggests baffling right along the lifter bores but doesn't
really explain how. I've added little pieces to baffle just those
openings but I wasn't really happy with the results. For this time
around I'd like to try something different. I have a deep pan
(Offenhauser). What I was thinking was cut a piece of .040" or so
aluminum the same shape as the pan, then bend it straight up up just
inside the crank case (the long direction), then a horizontal bend to
cover the bottom of the lifter bores. This seems to be the best
possible solution to keeping the oil in the pan.

Anybody ever tried such a thing? If you've ever heard a stock Corvair
after an autocross run, you'll know the problem I'm trying to solve.
Thanks for any info.

The "non -Otto Parts Baffle Spacer with Otto Pan" solution I have seen was
to add a full plate in between the deep pan and the block. There was enough of
a convoluted hole in the plate to worm the pick-up through (Actually
allowing the plate to be installed over the already installed pick-up) and several
one-inch holes punched through, moved inboard of the case mounting bolts a
bit, say 3/4". These holes are necessary to allow the oil to return from the
heads to the sump (underneath the plate) but restrict the oil from climbing up
the sides while cornering. I would use the Otto pick-up, dropped the the
bottom of the pan (well, near the bottom) And be sure to have the "Fence" around
the pick-up to keep oil there. - Seth
