The late Milton Binion contributed many valuable ideas to maintaining and improving Vairs. One of the better ones IMO was his scheme to do away with the traditional leaks that occur in the "sandwich" consisting of the aluminum top crancase cover, the steel splash shield, the aluminum block and the two large gaskets that separate the whole shootin' match. Milton's scheme was to cut off the mating perimeter of the dissimilar steel component (the splash shield), securing it to the top crancase cover via bolts/nuts, thereby leaving only an aluminum-to-aluminum mating surface. I effected this change over ten years ago in my '62 Spyder ('66 block), sealing the two aluminum components with high-temp RTV. Has worked like a champ all these years; NO leaks. Just make sure there's no way the nuts securing the four bolts can back off, or you're gonna have a serious, serious problem! :)
