<VV> HELP!... push rod tubes...

I had this problem on a "rebuilt" engine I bought (pistons and guide plates
in backwards, always a good sign).  I could pull the pushrod tubes out of
their bores on some of them with no resistance at all, and not surprisingly,
they leaked. My solution was to buy ORV-211 O-rings from the local
industrial supply shop.  These are Viton and one size up from the Corvair
ORV-117 o-rings.

I took an old pushrod tube, cut the deeper/thicker end off and put it in a
lathe to spin it up.  Some 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper to bring it down to
size left me with a thick walled surface just slighty over the standard
size, and no more leaks!

Hi Cash,

I'd describe all the pushrod tubes I've ever installed as a "firm fit".
Usually, if properly lubed with oil or white lithium grease, I can push them
into place but it takes some effort.  They tend to "pop" into place as
others have described.  

Besides everything else that has been suggested as the cause for the
looseness, is it possible that the bores the the pushrods fit into have been
enlarged in someway?  Perhaps to clean up some damage to the bore?  Perhaps
someone in the past was a little over zealous with the cleanup process?
I've had to touch up the bores on heads and blocks before and it wouldn't
take much to accidently go too far.  Just a thought, you might want to check
it with a bore gauge.
