Chris, definitely sounds to me like your pump is dead.  If you had a spare, 
or could borrow a "known good" one, you coud quickly confirm.  Manual or 
electric is one of the great, perpetual debates, like early or late, points 
or electronic ign, adjust valves cold or hot & running...the right answer is 
what's right for you-you have to decide.  You could probably, more easily 
buy an electric fuel pump that would get you going from your FLAPS than buy 
a mechanical pump.  The "correct", safe installation includes switches to 
keep the pump from running when the engine isn't, or if the car flips over 
(Corvairs are known to do that <GGG>) and various people have kits that 
include all that.
