<VV> Jacking and Jackstands

I know there was a thread about this recently but there was no real
"resolution."

If I jack my car using the jacking points, I can't put jackstands
there.  So is it better to jack from some other point and use the
jacking points for jackstands, or to put the jackstands somewhere
else?

Historically, I have put a piece of wood along the rocker panels just
in front of the jacking points and once the whole side of the car came
up high enough, put the jackstand under the jacking point and let the
car settle down on it.  Seems kind of ugly.  Plus it requires access
from the side which I don't have much of.

PS can't use the drivetrain even if I wanted to, don't have one!
