<VV> Powerglide low gear problem

 My son's `66 500 (rust bucket) has developed a problem with the transmission. It seems to have NO 1st gear. If you get it rolling it will go fine but it will not start up from a stop. Reverse works fine. I suspect the low band but I know NOTHING about a powerglide (or any other automatic). What is involved in replacing the low band? Can it be done on the car? He is working on a replacement for this car but is not ready yet to place the new one in service and needs transportation for school.
