Hi Norm:
I'm grateful for your response. The heads have been painstakingly deflashed. All carbs are rebuilt and yes it does have a spyder dash with an AC thermistor attached. Timing is set at 18 degrees.
The temperature I was experiencing was near 400 in heavy stop & go traffic (90 degrees outside). Having read what you and JR pointed out, seems like my concerns (at least for now) were unfounded.
