  Having said all that, I think Padgett has made an excellent point, 
  namely, the harmonic balancer maybe installed without the 
  woodruff key and 180 out.

Frankly, with an omitted (or busted....it DO happen ya'know!) Woodruff key,
the timing could be anywhere!  If that IS the case, that you guys got it to
run at all is pure unadulterated happenstance!
