My advice is go, go, go!!!  These things are more fun than you might think.  I only joined a year and half ago and I've been to a few of these things -  including the national convention in Buffalo and I always have fun.  It's wonderful seeing all the cars - especially since the only Corvair I usually see is mine.  And most of the people aren't too objectionable.  Don't be afraid to enter your car at least in the people's choice.  It's really just a car display with  people voting on their favorites and you never what their favorite will be.  It's more fun to participate.  I even got talked into autocrossing at the national and although I was slow, I had a blast!!!
