Hokey folks, I know of at least three different backspacing families used
in GM 5x4 3/4 (aka 5x120.7).
1) The early drum brake cars (maximum backspacing)
2) Mid-70's disk brake cars (mid)
3) Late models (least)
Now to maintain geometry the backspacing should be around 3.75" on a 6" rim
and 4" on a 6" rim. The 14x6 Snowflakes I have on the front of my 66 only
have about 3 1/4" which increase the track (sticks out) a little but still
inside the wheel wells on mine so looks good. Steering effort is up a bit
as is the arc the tire makes when turning (why a 195x70x14 is all that will
fit).
Do not know anything about the late models other than they are "different"
- anyone know why ? Could see GM trying to fit FWD wheels on RWD cars as a
cost savings but then the backspacing would increase, not decrease.
Just to add to the confusion, aftermarket wheels usually toss in a bit
"more" just to maximise the number of applications. No dealer wants to hear
"those wheels you just sold me hit my brake calipers.
