The fan bearing will typically howl when cold when it needs lube or 
replacement.  It generally shuts up after the engine warms, but not always. 
If it does not quiet down when warm, you'd best attend to it right away. 
Since you will have the top cover off anyway, this is the perfect time to 
replace it.
