<VV> Engine Howl

Hi All....I'm getting ready to disassemble the top end of the engine for cleaning and painting.  But I need some help concerning a howling sound which seems to be coming from the fan pulley area during low rpm only.  I don't know what a "going bad" pulley bearing sounds like.  This howl is not a grinding noise but more of an air movement sound. It gets quite loud at times.  Do fans have a tendency to howl???
  If I do need to do some repair I might as well do it while the shoud and top metal is removed.  What do ya think????  Thanks for the help.
