I've corresponded privately with Dave Newell about the mysterious luggage
that may or may not have been specifically designed to fit Corvair trunks (or,
for that matter, the assertion that '62 Corvair trunks may have been designed to
accomodate specific luggage). With his permission, I'm sharing what he's
told me so far.

Dave,
Are you aware of any luggage specifically manufactured and marketed to fit
the Corvair trunk?
Thanks!

Hi Bill,
No, not that I can remember. There were Chevy displays at auto shows in 60 &
61 which had luggage carefully made to maximize space in the Vair trunk, but
the luggage wasn't sold commercially.

There's currently a discussion on Virtual Vairs where it has been asserted
that the trunk for the '62 Corvair was specifically designed to accomodate
specific, pre-existing luggage. I have expressed some skepticism. I am not aware
of the trunk on '62s being shaped markedly different from that on '61s, '63s
or '64's. In fact, I thought that the '61 was essentially the same shape other
than the concave vs. convex front end, the other changes being accounted for
by merely moving the spare to the engine compartment and going with the
"direct air" heater as opposed to the "tropical winds" gas fired heater in the trunk
on '60s. Can you shed some light on this?
Thanks!

Hi again,
The 62 trunk shape was no different, volume-wise, than the 61 and 63-64
trunks. This is a new one on me, and I'm very skeptical, too.
[BTW] I think the poster might mean "Maximillion" luggage. I've never seen
any fitted luggage for Corvairs advertised or promoted by their company or any
other company. And Chevrolet didn't offer fitted luggage. But I'm sure that
Maximillion or other luggage companies would have made up a special fitted set,
as they would for any other car.

In fact, it may have been "MaximilliAn" as I see several more hits "googling"
that than for "MaximilliOn."
