<VV> Car haulers

I have a _lot_ of experience moving cars. I have a few independents I
use (mostly for Minis and the like), but something this large is beyond
their capacity.

Open or closed? For a driver (all of my cars are drivers) I would not
spend the extra for enclosed unless it was only a couple hundred
more...or I needed to meet a tight schedule.

Of the commercial guys, the best have been

D&G: http://www.dandgauto.com/ (open, car carrier, single owner/driver
and a single truck, inflexible schedules, moderate cost, exceptional
service and care)

Kiwi: http://www.kiwiskarriers.com/ (open, 3 car ramps, several
trucks/drivers, but all owned. Very good service, very flexible
schedules, expensive)

Premier Auto Carriers www.premierautocarriers.com (high tech operation,
enclosed car carriers, top notch service, price will make your eyes water)

My only real advice is STAY AWAY FROM BROKERS who fill deadhead loads.
Neither the drivers nor the trucks are always suitable for hauling
vintage cars and fraud is rampant... I was very nearly sued by a driver
who got stiffed when the broker didn't pay him.... but I knew I was safe
when you retorted that the fact that his contract was with the Broker
and not me was "purely technical"... I advised him to check that with
his lawyer and get back to me.... last I heard of him.

All of those are CHEAP. I was paying prices higher than that a year ago
when gas was 30% cheaper. I don't think you could go out there and pick
it yourself for $950 in fuel alone....

Check with my three carriers above to get some comparisons... I've not
moved anything commercially in over a year..

Did I mention STAY AWAY FROM BROKERS?

EDIT: Just as I was about to send this I got an email for one one of my
private guys that a mutual friend (based in TN) is currently delivering
2 Minis to CA and is coming back empty this weekend with a 25' enclosed
trailer... Larry at cell 865-300-3599 (owner of
http://www.microcarlot.com/microweb_content.html ). Not sure if he has a
load yet or what he'd charge, but he's very trustworthy....

Good luck!
Bill
