<VV> 3/4 sp shifter

...ok,my turn,,I'm stumped...I'm scrambling to get the 65 coupe down off the blocks before the weather turns sour,and what I thought was a 4sp shifter just won't select 2nd or rev,1st is 'hard'..grabbing the trans coupler I can select all gears,so I 'borrowed' the shifter from my son's car,and saw the 3-tab lock underneath was different,ground the opening to'match',and still can't get 2nd+rev...is the bottom 'cup' also different,or could the top spring seat be in wrong?...aaarrrgghhhh,,Tom Z..//
