how is oil pressure etc?
i would put a strong (old hard drive )magnet in the pan and maybe even the 
valve covers and a magnetic drain plug to watch it. were lifters free in bores?
was break in lube used and rpm's kept up for the first hour or so? thats the 
critical time for break in on a cam. keep from long idle periods for the first 
several hours of running.
