Smitty Says: This subject has mutated a couple of times and I think it is time to change the subject line. Let's call it Smittys Timing for want of anything better. If anybody is interested, here we go again.
When I tore the engine down because of a knock I found it to be mains. I replaced the inserts and then found the .010 crank was worn beyond what is acceptable to me. So I went to the ultra locker and picked out a standard Late crank that was damaged and had it turned to .010. I remember when I put the crank and cam in that I moved the gear one tooth this way and then one tooth that way because it didn't seem quite right. I checked a couple of times after that to make sure. Anyway, not being able to digest what I was seeing, I went ahead with the reassembly of the engine. Today I got the bellhousing off and started checking the indexing again. Same ole stuff. Then I took my cranium out of my rectum and started thinking. I knew I had read about that situation before. I got my home made Communique tech index and looked up the 4 degree 140 PG crank gear. That was it. That was what I had installed.
So what the H. Lots of those things made, and they all ran fine. What does that have to do with my one sided running car? That is a question. I know, yall are going to say, not a darn thing. But until I find something better or you give me something better to work with, I am taking that crank out and putting a standard gear on in its place before the engine goes back together.
For you who aren't following this thing closely my scepticism is based on Craig Nicol saying he had exactly the same carb problem with someone putting a cam in, one tooth off. You find that hard to believe? I do too. But at least he was the only one that gave me the only solid information that he had experienced the same problem.
Oh BTW, You guys discussing when is TDC and talking about using degree wheels and dial indicators. If you will go back in my posts I didn't say I was incapable of doing those things. I asked a very simple question. How accurate can I count on the timing index mark on the rear casting being, as related to the damper keyway, the crank keyway at the other end, and the timing mark on the cam gear. If the timing index mark is absolutely on zero degrees, should I not be able to count on the crank gear notch being where it belongs? (either "on" or 4 degrees "off" ?) Fact is I don't even want this info any more, so if you want to talk about it, change the subject line. Thanks
