Dan, it is unfortunate, for you, that you didn't live in the hotbed of
engine mods [ SoCal / 70's]. Where a High school graduate with NO engineering
education was exposed to every imaginable modification / combination possible!
After going to a CORSA convention and looking a 300 cars..once a
year......can you imagine seeing 10,000 cars every weekend? All you had to do was LOOK /
LISTEN / ASK QUESTIONS [ bring beer!].
Early on, when Corvairs were the "King of the sand dunes", and most were
running mostly stock engines.....it was noticed that engines with the "desert air
pack" [ fan duct and HIGH RISE AIR CLEANER] ran better than those with the
stock aircleaner!
Those 2" tubes raising the cross tube made a difference! These guys didn't
use it for performance...it was to try and keep sand out! BUT it worked
BETTER!!!
see http://corvaircenter.com/phorum/read.php?1,8735,8735#msg-8735 for
pics and GM drawings!
Same with head ports......First came all the "Tri-porting" with those
beautiful tubes and Webers...........then it was noticed that a buggy with just a 2
bbl on a center mount manifold...ran way faster........by ASKING, I found
that he had DRILLED the exhaust ports at an angle and fab'd headers to fit...my
next question, " what size drill? and at what angle?". Soon the local speed
shops were offering the same thing!
