License plates are handier when you just don't have a few angstroms of metal and glass or a micrometer with you to measure that, on the side of the road at night when your cap blows ...
Plus don't forget the electrical tape to wrap it all together, lash it down so it doesn't short out on something or get caught in the fan ...

It's that easy, at work we make them with a few hundred angstroms of metal a few hundred angstroms of essentially glass and then another few hundred angstroms of metal.
