My Lakewood had a transistor radio but since we didn't get it till the mid-70s, it could have been a much later add-in...or original transistor type.  The tube type radios in my 50s era GM trucks are BIG...quite a bit bigger than the transistor Corvair radios that I have; it's hard to imagine them fitting behind a little Corvair dash bezel....but ok.

I've done some rebuild work on the tube types...very interesting...
