way back when i was running a spyder i could have a new NAPA (modac at that 
time) belt off the pulleys at will , just going for second gear. in fact i took 
a modac factory rep for a ride once demonstrating this after he installed one 
of his belts in place of the gates 3vx560 i had started to use with great 
success.  he conceeded that their belt apparently was to stretchy for that 
application. i now run the clarks or otto belts with no troubles on 64 or later type 
belt guards. of course i now run powerglides which are much more forgiving 
than 5000 rpm shifts...
