I get a kick out of all the "new car only" types ...Tires smoking.....etc.
In '63....it took a lot of car to be quick.....so...in SoCal...we built
'em....Rich kids and Sevicemen were the ones that got the NEW cars...
Being in Highschool and working P/T at a carlot....I had access to many
"brains" in racing circles.....John Force would've been your local Mufflerman,
Jeff Gordon would fix your radiators....Mario Andretti would do your upholstery,
etc... They raced on weekends! No personal Appearances!!
So, I built a 34 Ford 3 window CP chopped / channeled..394 OLDs, set back
10" from original location, with stick Hydro, 50 Olds rear susp. [ coils for
easy preloading of tires / early 3 link susp.], 2400 lb weight. To get the
power to the pavement..5.38 gear in the rear with 8" recapped "Cheater Slicks"
by "Hurst Tire" in San Diego......name familiar....gggg The ONLY thing we
didn't do in the backyard.....the Headers..[ we cleaned up and painted the
Muffler Shop in exchange for them]
Friend had a 52 Henry J with 389 Pontiac....you sat in the back seat! We
learned it was just a matter of getting the "right combo" to be quick....
Fastest car in street drags...friends 55 Chev.....with set back 277[?]
DeSoto Hemi.....with 5.88's.. Ford 3 speed with OD!!
