<VV> 140 Running hot

Hey Michael,
By hot, do you mean hot enough to scare a lawyer away from the gates of hell? And by carbs rebuilt, do you mean properly soaked, blown out and carefully reset?
If you don't find something obviously blocked or the timing considerably off, here's a couple of things I found when I investigated my "new" old 140, a real cooker on high-speed runs. If after checking mixture, seals, blockage etc. from the other emails doesn't pan out, try these. On mine, EVERYTHING was wrong.
  1) Every fastener on the engine was only an RCH tighter than finger tight. This meant all four carbs leaked at the bases.
  2) Every piece of rubber was hard as a rock, giving me massive vacuum leaks at the crossover tube.
  3) Oil cooler was 3/4 covered with dead leaves.
  4) Could you have cracked one of the phenolic rsiers under a carb, and are there gaskets on both sides of it?
...and if it always has run hot, you might have a head flash problem. The 140 has very little open area between the fins compared to a 110. In my case, about 90% of what was supposed to be open was flashed over. Let me know if you need advice on how to deflash it and a picture to guide your work.

Perimeter seal and heater hoses are properly installed? Or heater hose
openings blocked off? What is "hot"? Head temp readings are??? Rich
running would tend to be cooler than lean running. You sure the timing is
right, not too retarded?

If all the above is OK, maybe you picked up a mouse house over the winter -
blocking air flow. Start by taking the cover plate off the oil cooler. If
evidence is found there, you probably need to remove the "turkey roaster"
and clean things out.
