Hi Jan
IM HAVING A PG PROBLEM SLIPPING ON ME AT THE SHIFT FROM LOW TO DRIVE
This is usually a low band adjustment issue-
There is an adjustment for the low band on the drivers side TOP of the
transmission very near the front, just behind the ring shaped casting. It
consists of a square screw head with a locknut (think the locknut is 5/8")
to lock the screw adjuster. It faces UP and slightly tipped inboard at about
the 1 o'clock position facing backwards to the rear of the car from directly
in front of the trans flat front face.
Proper adjustment of this is described in the shop manual but you can get
close enough by experiementing. The adjustment sets the slack in the low
band up, if its too lose, the low band releases the clutch drum too soon,
before the high clutch kicks in, and the transmissions sort of oozes into
neutral for a second on an upshift, and downshifts get sloppy.
The engine mounting crossmember nearly covers the adjuster, so you will have
to experiement with the wrenches you have availible to find one that will
undo the locking nut. Once its loosened 1/4 turn or so, grab the square head
screw and hold that while you unscrew the lock nut a little more (say, one
extra turn) so the screw can be turned a little farther in.
Try turning the square head screw in about 1/2 a turn deeper into the
transmission than the original position you discovered it, and then holding
the screw with pliers or a wrench or anything that will fit the space and
work, lock the outside locknut again and go road test the car. You may have
to play with this adjustment a little bit over a few trips to tighten it
JUST BARELY enough the transmission slip goes away. You may go only 1/4 turn
farther than this point on the adjustment before theres problems possible,
so do your best to sneak up on that exact adjustment as best you can.
To recap-
Unlock the locknut slightly
Spin the locknut up half a turn extra or so while holding the center 'square
head' adjuster screw
screw the center screw in about half a turn
re-lock the nut without allowing the center square head screw to be
disturbed
road test the car far enough to determine if the problem is better or gone.
if the trans still slips, screw the adjuster in slightly farther in 1/4 turn
increments until it stops slipping
if the trans doesnt slip, uncrew the center screw until it begins to
after establishing exactly where the trans will start the slipping, screw
the adjuster in 1/4-1/3 turn farther than that point, and lock the nut for
good and enjoy a Positive Powerglide.
Hope thats some help, this isnt a hard job aside from the nuisance of
reaching the adjuster.
If I might suggest also, please avoid the use of CAPITAL letters in posts on
email lists, its interpreted as shouting and generally frowned upon most
places, sometimes accidents happen though;-)
