when you put a std shift engine agains a powerglide , most of the time the 
tourqe curve is about unacceptable. the  powerglide engine with a stick drives 
very well. it is more noticeable in modern times with modern? gas available.   
playing with the distrib might help a little but i doubt it.  i would  
consider swapping the distributors also. some of this is "matter of opinion" but i 
bet on a lot of tinker time with the powerglide to make it drive nice.
just my observations from playing around with such combos over the years.
