You should never remove spark plugs when the engine is hot!!! Too easy to
strip threads.
You have excellent compression, it is not a valve adjustment or lifter
issue.
My guess is the missing sheet metal at rear is allowing all the engine heat
to raise up into the engine compartment. Remember the heat is supposed to
go out behind the engine and thru the rear grille.
Do you have the summer/winter plate attached to close off the hole in the
shrouds by the oil cooler? If open, all the heat goes back up into the
engine compartment to warm carb for winter operation.
Without the rear shroud in place, I would remove the bottom shrouds. Their
only function is to make the heater work. You still get some heat to the
windshield (if your fan blower works), for those foggy days, without the
shrouds.
Make sure the oil cooler is not clogged with dirt/leaves/rags, etc. Easy to
remove two sheet metal screws and look.
