<VV> Air Compressors--no corvair

This advice will keep you from burning down your house.
Check the amperage on the motor's data plate or read the recommendations in whatever paperwork you get, if buying new. You need 14 gauge wire (typical house wiring) and a 15 amp breaker for up to 15 amps, 12 gauge and a 20 amp breaker for 20 amps, and 10 gauge and 30 amp breaker for 30 amps. This is the same no matter what voltage you run.
Whatever you do, DON"T BE STUPID ENOUGH to put a 15 amp plug on your compressor just to make it match the holes in the outlet. A 15-amp has two parallel vertical legs. The 20 amp has one horizontal slot so you can't plug it into a 15-amp circuit. If the compressor draws 20 amps and has a 20-amp plug, make sure everything from the breaker on down the line is set up for 20 amps.
IF YOUR WIRING is 12 gauge, you can change the oulet itself to a multiple amperage style, which has one t-shaped slot, letting you plug in either the 15-amp or 20-amp male.
DON'T EVEN THINK of putting in a 20-amp breaker if the wiring isn't 12 gauge.

Oh, and use some
pretty fat wire to your motor... check with your electrical supply people,
they will know how big you need.
