I managed to get the Safeguard up and running this weekend. No doubt you'll
recall that we had a long discussion regarding which wire in the body
harness at the engine compartment connector would give me 12v with the
ignition hot and during cranking. The magic wire was the black with pink
stripe, though I will say that the pink in that stripe is darn close to
purple. On my '65 Corsa I could not ID any wire that was black with a
purple stripe and the only purple one in there was a different shade than
the one with the pink stripe. I do think they made an attractive couple,
though.
Thanks to the many who responded. I thought that this response from Ed
Dowd was particularly helpful:
"GM 'standardized' the color usage in 1966 and eliminated most striping on
wires as it confused more than helped. That is why the 'black with pink
stripe' became just pink in '66. The same can be said for the black/yellow
to just yellow in '66.
"A few of the standardizations:
"Pink is 12 volts fused when ign is in run or start.
"Orange is 12 volt fused and 12 volts all the time, even in the off
position.
"Red is 12 volts but not fused except in cases where there is a fusible
link."
Based upon what Ed says, if you are looking for a similar wire in a '66 and
later model, you're looking for a solid pink wire rather than the black with
pink stripe that worked for me.
Again, thank you for the help.

Norm Witte
