Bob,
    Well, on a clear night you can use Polaris, the  North star.  It's at the 
end of the "handle" of the "Little Dipper" and the  2 stars at the edge of 
the "Big Dipper" point directly to it.  Just line up  your car so it's pointing 
straight toward Polaris and adjust your compass  (hopefully it's lighted for 
night use.)
