The GoNed Race Team, Wichita Division, participated in the SCCA autocross
today. The event was held at Raytheon Aircraft, formally Beech Aircraft, which
also describes the surface very very sandy. To add the difficulty there was a
light constant rain for the first heat. Jim Dallas and I ran in first heat.
Jim drove his 64 coupe that just got a 140, stiffer springs, quick steering,
and A compound tires. The car ran very well, at least I didn't hear him
complain about anything. He was sliding around quite a bit, but it was wet and
sandy and every in first heat was pretty loose. He did have one run that was a
DNF three times. I guess if your going to get lost 3 times, it's best to do it
on one run.
My runs were a different story. My 66 Corsa ran great, I think I have the
suspension setup right. My problem was directional ineptitude, I had 3 DNFs on
by first 3 runs in 3 different places. The first run I decided not to use the
wipers and couldn't really see after 3/4 of the course. The second run I used
the wipers and they messed up my concentration. The third run it was just
the "red mist" clouding my vision. Luckily, my last two runs were clean and the
times were respectable.
Kirk Eck was the third Corvair at the event. This was Kirk's first
autocross. He drove his 65 coupe with a 110. Kirk ran in second heat, after the rain
stopped. Kirk was getting out of the car and acting very nonchalant. One of
the SCCA guy came over to comment on how much Kirk's head was coming out of the
car, wonderful stock seats. He also asked Kirk to hold out his hand. At that
point it was obvious that the adrenaline was flowing. Kirks times improved on
each run and he finished up with a very impressive time. I think he's
addicted.
I managed to get the FCT (fastest Corvair time) with a 62.181, Jim was
second with a 63.924 and Kirk finished with a 67.925.
