Indeed we are!! The service manual calls the outer case the carrier. But a
quick look at Clarks affirms your terminology, which is more logical. It
appears my friend gave me a late carrier assembly, so now I have to decide
if I want to make it work, or pull the whole drive train. And it's 102
degrees here right now, so nothings going to happen until tomorrow morning!!

Maybe we are using different terminology....the carrier is what the ring
gear bolts too, and houses the spider and side gears...the lates have a
longer nose on the left side.

Carrier is unchanged. Did change ring gear/pinion gear assembly. Seems like
other posts are correct -- I used a late model assembly by mistake.
Thanks for the input.

Did you change out the differential carrier? if so, you might have exchanged
it with a 1960, which uses two short stub axles....if so, replace the left
with another short right and the problem is solved.
