-------------------------------------
On new or used pistons I check the rings for-
-free turning when in the ring groove.
- Piston ring grooves are also sealing surfaces, and must be clean, smooth and free of defects.
-proper side clearance (0.001 to 0.006 inch) using a feeler gage and the ring sharing the groove. Hastings relates excessive side clearance (worn piston) to ring breakage, among other bad things. http://www.hastingsmfg.com/Tools/gl_spacers.htm - (ring spacers)restore the top groove to its original width eliminating breakage of the top groove ring
-~ 0.000 inch "back clearance" . I want the ring face to be flush with the piston land when the ring is pushed all the way into the groove. http://www.21cgt.com/FMWebCatalog/default.htm
- no cylinder ridge. The ring and piston don't like whacking the ridge 3000 time a minute.
