Hmm....did you use an actual "pitman arm puller"?
I bought one specifically for the purpose..Ryan said his regular
adjustable puller would probably do it fine..so I said don't open the
pitman puller unless you need it.  He needed it. The regular puller he
has wouldn't phase it, with the specific pitman arm puller, he took it
right off no sweat.  The specific puller cost something like $16 at my
FLAPS.
