Hey John,
Could you clarify a few things? Too many pronouns in your post below for me
to be sure of what you're saying. :-)
I THINK you are saying:
1) E code headlights are way better than sealed beam headlights.
2) Cibie makes the best E-code headlights.
3) The best Cibie E-code product is the Complex Surface Reflector unit.
4) The non-CSR Cibie E-code unit is also fine--still better than sealed
beam.
5) Don't bother with HID sealed beams--they are junk.
What I am not sure about is with which lights you recommend a relay. My
understanding was that the CSR units did not need them because the reflector
design was able to provide great light without the extra amperage.
I have some vintage non-CSR Cibies in my '66 500 coupe (H1/H4--all four
lamps) and love them. I definitely have a relay there--makes a huge
difference (and also keeps my headlight switch from melting when the high
beams are on :-).
Does Cibie still make non-CSR E-code units that fit the Corvair? I was under
the impression that one had to be lucky and find some vintage units like I
did.
Thanks.

I can tell you, from a number of authorities, the Sylvania HID sealed beam
conversions are a TOTAL waste of time and money. They positively stink.
The BEST headlights are the Cibie E code headlights. For less than the HID
crap, you can buy a full set of Cibie CSRs from Daniel Stern, site. These
are far from cheap, but are THE state of the art in performance and quality
of ANY E code sealed beam conversions.
However, even the standard Cibie E codes are a far cry better than any
sealed beam healamp, and are considered the best of the standard E code
conversions. IMHO, if you're going to spring for E codes, make it
worthwhile and get the Cibie lights.
Relays, in my mind, are a must. With light output being proportional to the
3.5 power of the voltage, even small increases produce significant increases
in brightness. Then, you can put in 100/145 watt H4s, and 130 watt H1s, for
those who want an insane amount of light... <G>

c) some european cities require "running lights" and do not allow headlamp
use inside the city hence "city lamp"
d) Some of these auctions end at the $9.99 opening. $19.95 Shipping just

e) Probably coming from China
f) H-4 is a 55w bulb. Two are almost 10 amps. originals were 37 1/2 w May
need a relay.
g) for just $600 you could get an HID conversion.

h) H5006s are still available.
